Processor generation matters more than most retailers realize when they are comparing specs on a spec sheet. An Intel i5 chip handles multiple open applications and inventory lookups at once without lag, while older or lower tier processors can visibly hesitate the moment a store gets busy. Touchscreen response time matters just as much. A terminal that registers taps instantly lets a cashier move through a sale without double tapping or waiting for the screen to catch up.

Operating system choice affects daily use too. A Windows 11 Pro terminal gives staff a familiar desktop style interface and works with the point of sale software a business already runs, while Android based terminals suit businesses that want a simpler, tablet like experience. Neither is universally better. The right choice depends on what the store's software provider recommends and how the staff already work.

The honest answer to what a POS system costs is that it depends entirely on which pieces a business actually needs, and pricing pages that list a single number rarely tell the full story. Terminal hardware alone can range from an entry level unit built for a low volume counter to a flagship terminal with a faster processor built for a business running multiple transactions a minute during peak hours.

A cash drawer looks like the simplest piece of equipment at the counter, and that is exactly why it gets picked last and researched least. But the wrong drawer creates daily friction: bills that do not fit the compartments, a lock that sticks, or a connection that does not match the receipt printer or terminal already on the counter.

A tabletop scanner works well for a fixed checkout point where products pass across the counter in a steady stream, since the cashier does not need to pick up the scanner for every item. A handheld scanner earns its keep the moment products cannot easily be brought to the counter, such as bulky items, items still on a shelf, or a warehouse pick and pack process running alongside retail sales.

This distinction matters for daily cash handling procedure. A cashier who needs to remove excess cash from the drawer partway through a shift should never need the main combination or key to do it. Dropping the cash management hardware through the slot and continuing the sale keeps the count moving without exposing the safe's full contents to anyone at register level.
