Ask which specific caravans or lodges are dog-friendly caravan holidays, whether there's an extra charge, and whether there are dog walking areas on site. This is one of the most common causes of a frustrating check-in when it's left unchecked.

If you're travelling with children, pack a beach bag that stays by the door, buckets and spades, a windbreak if you have one, sun cream regardless of the forecast, and a full change of clothes kept in the car rather than the caravan, since sandy, wet children rarely want to walk back for it. Bikes are worth bringing if your park has cycle paths or is close to a coastal trail, and a car boot cool bag makes packed lunches for day trips much easier.

Cost works differently too. A self-catering caravan holiday means you control your food spend, cooking most meals in rather than eating out for every one, which suits a longer stay or a bigger family group where restaurant bills add up fast. A hotel bundles more into the room rate but gives you less choice over how you spend each day.

A static caravan holiday gives you a proper living area, a kitchen and usually two or three bedrooms, so it works well for families or groups who want room to spread out rather than one hotel room shared between everyone. Mornings tend to be more relaxed, you can make breakfast in your own time, let the kids potter about in pyjamas a bit longer, and plan your day without waiting on a restaurant sitting. Evenings work the same way. If you've had a full day out, cooking something simple and settling in with the caravan's own living space beats getting everyone dressed again for a dining room.

Ask about on-site facilities' actual opening hours and whether anything's seasonal. A pool that's only open during summer months, or a clubhouse with restricted evening hours outside peak season, changes what a break looks like considerably if you're travelling in spring or autumn.
